Why Choose a Slice Ceramic Scraper?

Most utility scrapers are made with thin, sharp metal blades. This can pose a serious problem. The excessive sharpness leads to injuries. Unfortunately, even other ceramic scraper designs simply imitate metal blades and use an excessively sharp blade edge.

Slice® utility scrapers use Slice blades, with their proprietary finger-friendly® blade edge. This means that our blades scrape effectively but are safer to touch and handle than other blades, and they hold their edge up to 11 times longer than steel.

Slice blades are made from 100 percent zirconium oxide, an extremely hard material that is non-sparking, non-conductive, non-magnetic, chemically inert, and never rusts. Our blades are safe for scraping high-temperature materials and do not leave behind marks, like metal scrapers can. Because our scrapers are so hard, however, they can scratch materials like glass, so approach scraping such surfaces cautiously and apply even pressure on the scraper blade to avoid catching an edge.

We’ve used an ergonomic scraper tool design, with features such as soft-touch hand grips and SureScrape™ to reduce hand strain.

What is SureScrape?

Occupational Health and Safety officers are always looking for ways to prevent accidents, which is why auto-retractable tools are popular. This retraction style eliminates the possibility of tools left lying around with their blades exposed (accidents waiting to happen).

When it comes to a hand scraper tool, though, auto-retraction poses a problem. If the user has to push and hold a slider to expose the blade, then scrape with a pushing motion at the same time, any resistance against the blade causes kickback. The force of that kickback transfers straight to the user’s thumb—a repetitive strain nightmare. For this reason, there are few (if any) other spring-loaded auto-retractable scrapers on the market.

Slice developed SureScrape as a way to reduce thumb strain and design a utility blade scraper that is auto-retractable and ergonomically friendly. SureScrape absorbs the force of resistance against the blade so the user doesn’t have to. At the same time, SureScrape releases as soon as the user lets go of the slider, allowing the hand scraper tool to be completely auto-retractable. This new technology is another example of Slice looking at design with fresh eyes to create safe, innovative tools.

Where Is a Utility Blade Scraper Used?

This type of hand tool is used in many kinds of manufacturing, DIY, and home settings. A Slice ceramic scraper is recommended for removing adhesives from smooth surfaces, such as stickers from glass (a note of caution: excessive or uneven pressure on the blade can cause the tool to scratch glass) and scraping off mildew, rust, or paint in home and industrial settings. They’re ideal for smoothing down vinyl decals on vehicles or wall surfaces. Anywhere you might use an overly sharp utility blade scraper, consider the safer Slice alternative instead.

How Do I Change the Scraper Blade?

To remove your Slice 10526 Rounded-Tip Blade or 10528 Pointed-Tip Blade from our scrapers, push the slider as far forward as you can to fully expose the blade. You’ll notice a tab at the front of the slider, which is engraved with the image of a lock. Push that tab down so that it can slide under the grey handle while you continue to push the slider forward as far as it will go. The blade should now be fully exposed and easy to remove.

After removing the old blade, line up your replacement blade with the notch on the orange or green blade holder and pull the slider back all the way so the blade is no longer exposed. Keep in mind that Slice blades last up to 11 times longer than steel blades, so you’ll be changing your blade a lot less often. Slice blades are also 100 percent recyclable. If you can’t find a ceramics recycling facility near you, send them back to Slice headquarters in San Jose, California, and we’ll recycle them for you.
