Replacing Carton Cutter Blades

The Slice® 10585 Manual Carton Cutter is a handy tool that’s small enough to slip into a shirt, pants, or lab coat pocket. It features our finger-friendly®, 100-percent zirconium oxide safety blades that last up to 11 times longer than stainless steel. But even our durable blades eventually need replacement. When that time comes, this video shows you how to quickly, easily, and safely change the blades.

Replacing carton cutter blades on the Slice® 10585 Manual Carton Cutter is a very quick, easy, and safe process. Because this handy tool is designed for ambidextrous use by either left- or right-handed people, you don’t have to worry about ensuring a particular orientation of the blade in its housing.

Although the Slice Manual Carton Cutters are shipped with our 10526 Ceramic Utility Knife Blades (Rounded-tip) as an added safety measure, our 10528 Ceramic Utility Knife Blades (Pointed-Tip) are available for use in applications where a pointed-tip blade makes the job easier.

Dangers of Blade Replacement

Replacing blades is a dangerous process, if you’re using a tool with traditional blades. Traditional blades are overly sharp when they’re manufactured, in an attempt to extend the useful life of the blade. Laceration injuries are an ever-present danger when using a tool with a new traditional blade.

However, these blades are even more dangerous when they are dulled through use. A dull blade causes the user to exert more force, which often results in tool slippage and injury. Every time you handle a dull traditional blade, you’re risking both puncture and laceration injuries. The more frequently you have to replace a blade, the more frequently you expose yourself to this risk.

Slice makes a true safety blade. Our blades are made from 100 percent zirconium oxide, an ultra-hard engineered ceramic. We then apply a proprietary double-angle grind by hand, using a diamond wheel. This creates a shortened initial cutting zone. Our thicker blades help prevent laceration injuries by displacing the skin if they come into contact with it, instead of puncturing or slicing it. Laceration injuries from incidental contact with our safer blades are far less likely than similar contact with a traditional blade.

How to Replace Carton Cutter Blades

Changing the blades on the Slice 10585 Manual Carton Cutter couldn’t be simpler, easier, or quicker. First of all, the Manual Carton Cutter only has two parts: the housing that holds the blade and an outer sheath.

You can follow along with the video for a step-by-step demonstration of how to replace the blade. Here’s how simple it is:

  • Turn the Manual Carton Cutter on its flat side.
  • Push the orange-colored blade housing from the blade end.
  • Grasp the other end of the orange blade housing and pull it straight out of the sheath.
  • At the bottom of the blade housing, there is an indentation to raise the hinged blade housing lid, exposing the blade.
  • You can flip the blade from one end to the other, to use the unused end of the doubled-pointed blade, or you can remove the used blade entirely and insert a new blade.
  • Make certain that the notch in the blade fits securely over the tab in the orange blade housing.
  • Close the lid on the orange blade housing.
  • Slide the orange blade housing, blade end first, into the sheath as far as it will go. Your Manual Carton Cutter now has a fresh blade edge and is ready for use.
