Liquid Recycling Plant Safeguards Employees With Slice Safety Knives

Aaron Tipton knows all too well how important hand safety is. At a previous job, he suffered a cut across the heel of his hand. As he describes it, “I got frustrated and tired at a packing station and I got the tape, but I also got my hand.”

Years later, now the Safety Manager at United Liquid Waste Recycling (ULWR), Tipton wishes he’d had a safer blade; “If I had been using one of your products it wouldn’t have happened. The likelihood would have been next to nothing.”

“If I had been using one of your products, it wouldn’t have happened. The likelihood would have been next to nothing.”

From one day to the next, ULWR employees don’t know what kinds of materials they’ll be dealing with, or in what packaging. Tipton explains the challenge: “We take the contents of the packages, get the liquid out of the containers and recycle both of those... Boxes come in daily: cardboard, heavier cardboard... boxes come in larger boxes; they have to break those smaller boxes down with some sort of cutting tool… we’re cutting quite a bit on a daily basis.” Add to this the frequency of staff handling dangerous materials like broken glass and metal shards.

Tipton sought a variety of ways to protect employees with a wider hand safety campaign. This includes using protective gloves and ceramic safety blades. After trying out Slice samples, he was impressed.

“I see—from a safety standpoint—an absolute need for this. It’s an amazing product. I don’t think there’s really much that can be said negative about it.”

“I’ve used the product myself… It works perfectly. I see—from a safety standpoint—an absolute need for this. It’s an amazing product. I don’t think there’s really much that can be said negative about it.”

Tipton feels that, in combination with with ANSI level 2 or 3 gloves, Slice blades reduce the chances of a laceration to “zero whatsoever”, whereas with metal blades, “it’s kind of up in the air.”

Slice is proud to be part of ULWR’s integrated safety plan. We completely agree with Aaron when he says that every layer of safety protection, “contributes to [employees] going home safe at the end of the night.”
