    The Slice® 10574 Disposable Scalpel features the same non-sparking, non-magnetic ceramic safety blade as our other tools, but with a lightweight, thin scalpel handle for maneuverability (handle is only 3 mm thick without its cap). The strong, slim glass-filled nylon handle of this sterile disposable scalpel fits into tight spaces and allows precise cuts. While our Finger-Friendly® edge is not recommended for applications that truly require ultra-sharp blades (such as surgeries), it provides a safer option for laboratory, craft, and manufacturing uses.

    What Is a Scalpel Used For?

    Most people associate a scalpel with surgery or dissection but don’t realize that scalpels are also widely used in laboratory, crafting, and manufacturing processes: wherever delicate cuts, scrapes or other maneuvers are required. When comparing other Slice precision knives with our scalpel, handle size and shape are the most obvious differences. Its ultra-thin, weight-balanced handle allows the tool to reach tight areas while giving the user enough control for intricate movements.

    What Is a Disposable Scalpel?

    A disposable scalpel is intended for single-use applications. These include many laboratory, manufacturing, and scientific uses where a sterile instrument is required to maintain the integrity of a clean room. Slice’s 10574 scalpel comes individually wrapped in a package of five scalpels. If sterility is not crucial, or if autoclave is the preferred method of sterilization, the 10568 scalpel with a replaceable blade may be a better choice for your needs, as the blade is autoclave friendly.

    How is the Slice Disposable Scalpel Safer?

    As with all Slice ceramic safety blades, our ceramic scalpel blade features our proprietary grind, which cuts materials effectively but resists cutting skin. This means that the user is much less likely to get cut, which saves companies and individuals time and money in the long run.

    As well, our 100 percent zirconium oxide blades are non-conductive, non-magnetic, non-sparking, chemically inert, and never rust. They require no oil coating or special maintenance and can be disposed of without a special sharps box. With a lightly weighted slim handle, our scalpels are balanced and stable, and give the user superb control when manipulating the instrument in tight spaces.

    What is Gamma Sterilization?

    Gamma sterilization is a non-invasive method of sterilization that offers distinct advantages over other methods. Comparable to X-rays, gamma radiation bathes the product in high-energy rays that penetrate the packaging of the disposable scalpel and blade, killing microorganisms. The rays work by breaking the bonds in bacterial DNA, thus killing the bacteria.

    Because this method is not invasive, it can be used on the scalpels after they are sealed in individual packages, preventing any possible contamination from occurring after sterilization. Gamma irradiation has been a standard method of sterilization since the advent of disposable medical devices in the 1960s.

    Gamma irradiation is a simple and effective method of sterilization that occurs in a controlled environment and avoids the pitfalls of heat sterilization (including heat stress on the instrument) and moisture-generating sterilization (including the creation of potentially problematic condensate or off-gassing).
